I am proud that this medal is coming to Armenia. I’m more than happy. I would really like for it to be gold, but the bronze medal is as valuable as the gold medal for me.

This is what artistic gymnast Artur Davtyan, who scored the bronze medal at the 32nd Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, said during a conversation with Armenian News-NEWS.am.

“I’m very happy and proud that this Olympic medal is coming to Armenia. I’m happy that I succeeded in scoring it. I don’t know how I feel at this moment. I just feel proud,” he added.

Davtyan, 28, scored the first medal in artistic gymnastics at the Olympics for the first time in the history of independent Armenia.

Armenia’s leading gymnast scored the bronze medal in the men’s vault. In the final, Europe’s champion and winner of the European Games scored 14.733 points after two leaps.

Armenia took an Olympic medal in artistic gymnastics after 41 years.

After receiving the medal, the first person Davtyan contacted was his wife, Anahit Shegunts, who was following her husband’s performance at Tokyo 2020 live along with her 2-year-old daughter Alisa, Davtyan’s friends and members of the gymnastics team at Albert Azaryan Sport School.
