Rio de Janeiro Governor Claudio Castro has rejected the idea of renaming the legendary Maracana Stadium after three-time world champion Pele amid the dissatisfaction of the local population, Reuters reports.

Pelé, 80, has played for Marakana many times as part of the Brazilian national team. It was in that stadium that the legendary Brazilian scored the 1,000th goal of his career.

Marakana Stadium opened in 1950.
