Armenia vs Iceland clash: The first serious test

The Armenian national team will play their first home clash in the qualifying tournament of the 2022 World Cup on Sunday. 

In the second round, the national team under the leadership of Joaquin Caparros will host the Icelandic national team at the Republican stadium.

Confrontation history

The national teams of Armenia and Iceland have met three times. The first two matches between the teams took place in the qualifying round of Euro 2000. In the first match on October 10, 1998, at the Hrazdan Stadium in Yerevan, a goalless draw was recorded, and on June 5 of the following year in Reykjavik, the Icelandic national team won 2-0.

The previous time the national teams of Armenia and Iceland met on February 6, 2008. In a friendly match, the Icelanders won Armenians 2-0.

Previous clashes

In the qualifying round of the 2022 World Cup, the Armenian national team started with a victory over Liechtenstein. The Armenian footballers won thanks to the opponent's own goal in the 84th minute.

Losses

One of the experienced players of the Armenian national team Gevorg Ghazaryan was unable to help the Armenian national team in the previous clash. The 32-year-old midfielder continues to recover from injury in the national team's camp.

Captain of the Armenian national team, Roma midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Khimki midfielder Arshak Koryan will miss the match due to injury.

The game will take place at the Republican stadium and according to the UEFA decision, the stadium will be 30 percent full. For the first time since the break, the national team will play with the support of fans.

In the FIFA ranking, the Icelandic national team is in 46th place (Armenia is in 99th place).
