First foreign coach of Premier League Josef Venglos dies at 84
18:14 27 January, 2021Renowned Slovakian coach Josef Venglos has passed away at the age of 84, UEFA’s press service reported.
The former footballer played as a midfielder and became a Yugoslavian champion once with Bratislava’s FC Slovan in 1955. At the age of 30, he ended his career due to an illness, after which he left for Australia and started pursuing his career in coaching.
Venglos has coached football clubs of various countries, as well as the national teams of Australia, Czechoslovakia, Malaysia, Slovakia and Oman. He scored bronze medal with the Czechoslovakian team at Euro-1980, and made it to the quarter final at NC-1990. In 1980, Venglos was recognized as the top coach in Europe.
In 1990-91, Venglos became the first foreign coach of the English Premier League after working for Aston Villa.
