Magnus Carlsen defeated twice in past two years

In the 8th round of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament taking place in the Dutch city of Wijk aan Zee, world chess champion Magnus Carlsen was defeated by 18-year-old Russian chess grandmaster Andrey Esipenko with black figures at the 32nd step.

Carlsen was also defeated in classic chess in October 2020 when he lost to Polish chess player Jan-Krzysztof Duda. Before that, he hadn’t lost any match since 2018.

After the 8th round of Tata Steel Chess, Carlsen is in 8th place with 4 points and 1.5 points behind the single leader, 17-year-old Iranian chess grandmaster Alireza Firuza. Andrey Esipenko shares the 2nd-4th places with 5 points.
