Espanyol manager Francisco Rufete has apologized to the team's fans for the club’s being relegated from the Spanish LaLiga, Marca reported.

After losing to Barcelona 0-1 in the 34th round, Espanyol lost the opportunity to climb to the 17th place.

"Our club has a lot of fans who deserve better results. We tried our best, but we didn't succeed. I am proud to be the manager of Espanyol.

In the future, we must play the way we played today against Barcelona. It will be difficult, but this game should be the basis of our future success.

We are in great pain for being relegated from LaLiga. We will do everything possible to return," Rufete said.

After 35 games in the current season of LaLiga, Espanyol are in the last place with 24 points, and are 11 points behind Eibar, which are in the 17th place. There are solely three rounds left in the current season.
