Renowned Armenian athlete, coach and referee dies

Renowned athlete, coach and referee Stepan Ghazaryan has died at the age of 84, reports the press service of the Armenian Wrestling Federation.

Ghazaryan was a sport master of the former USSR, Merited Coach of the USSR and top (Olympic) wrestling referee.

Born on June 29, 1935 in Yerevan, Ghazaryan graduated from the Armenian State Institute of Physical Culture and served as coach of wrestling teams and a referee at various championships. Since 1991, he was the coach of the Greco-Roman wrestling style team of Greece.

He was awarded the Movses Khorenatsi Medal of Armenia and received gold, silver and bronze orders and a gold whistle.

Since 2002, he was an honorable citizen of Daghstan of the Russian Federation.

The Requiem Service will be held on June 25 in Yerevan, and the funeral will be held the next day.
