During the ceremony of receiving one of the highest awards of Catalonia - the Creu de Sant Jordi, the Argentine Barcelona striker Lionel Messi distanced himself from act of seeking freedom for political prisoners
The episode during which Messi also did not want to applaud, did not escape the attention of the Catalan and Spanish media.
Messi is also now just the third Club athlete to receive the Creu de Sant Jordi, after Juan Antonio San Epifanio, Epi, in 1996 and Johan Cruyff in 2006.
During the current season, Messi scored 48 goals and made 22 assists in 48 appearances.
