Swedish assistant referee Fredrik Klyver received a gruesome head injury after a beer cup was thrown from the crowd, during the Europa League third qualifying round first-leg clash between Sturm Graz and AEK Larnaca.
The incident occurred in the 78th minute of the game, which was interrupted, and it resumed 40 minutes later.
But the linesman could not continue his work, and therefore he was replaced by the fourth official.
Police were able to detect, through instant replay, the Austrian fan who had thrown the cup.
