Armenia President: Best of the best are vying for title of Candidate

The President of Armenia and the President of the Chess Federation of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan, on Friday delivered remarks at the opening ceremony of the 2018 Candidates Tournament—to determine the challenger for the 2018 World Chess Championship—in the German capital city of Berlin.

“This tournament is unique, with its nature,” Sargsyan noted, in particular. “The best of the best are vying for the title of the Candidate.”

Also, the Armenian president will make the first symbolic move and kick off Saturday’s first round, at 6pm Armenia time.
In the first round, Armenia’s top chess player, Grandmaster (GM) Levon Aronian, will face GM Ding Liren (China), whom he beat at the final of the 2017 FIDE World Chess Cup.
