World Chess Cup: Armenia’s Aronian loses to Russia’s Matlakov

Grandmaster (GM) Levon Aronian (Armenia), on Sunday suffered a surprise defeat against GM Maxim Matlakov (Russia) in the second classic chess match in Round 3 of the 2017 FIDE World Chess Cup being held in Tbilisi, the capital city of Georgia.

Aronian, who plays first board for the three-time World Chess Olympiad champions and the former World Team Chess champions Armenia, played with the black pieces and accepted his defeat in the 27th move.

As a result, the score of this game between them has equaled at 1-1, and the winner of this pairing will be determined at Monday’s tiebreaker.

The World Chess Cup finalists will be eligible to compete in the Candidates Tournament to determine the challenger for the World Chess Championship.
