Magnus Carlsen defeated twice in past two years

In the 8^th round of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament taking place in the Dutch city of Wijk aan Zee, world chess champion Magnus Carlsen was defeated by 18-year-old Russian chess grandmaster Andrey Esipenko with black figures at the 32^nd step.

Carlsen was also defeated in classic chess in October 2020 when he lost to Polish chess player Jan-Krzysztof Duda. Before that, he hadn’t lost any match since 2018.

After the 8^th round of Tata Steel Chess, Carlsen is in 8^th place with 4 points and 1.5 points behind the single leader, 17-year-old Iranian chess grandmaster Alireza Firuza. Andrey Esipenko shares the 2^nd-4^th places with 5 points.
