World number one ranked player Novak Djokovic failed to advance to the quarterfinals of the US Open after losing to Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka 4-6, 5-7.
In the third set defending US Open champion Djokavic was forced to retire because of a shoulder injury.
Wawrinka will face Russia's Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals.
