Bulgarian referee Bogdan Dochev has died aged 80, informed the Bulgarian Football Union.

The cause of his death, however, was not disclosed.

Dochev was the assistant referee who failed to spot football legend Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” goal in Argentina’s 1986 World Cup quarterfinal clash against England.

Argentina won the quarterfinal tie 2-1, with Tunisian referee Ali Bin Nasser later claiming he was waiting for Dochev to give him an indication of whether he had seen anything, but he did not.

After this scandal, Bogdan Dochev ended his refereeing career, and Ali Bin Nasser was banned from officiating international tournaments.
