Portugal national team captain Cristiano Ronaldo commented on their penalty shootout win against Poland in Thursday’s quarterfinal match at the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Euro 2016, which France is hosting.

“We achieved a just victory,” O Jogo (English: The Game) sport newspaper of Portugal quoted the 31-year-old forward of FC Real Madrid (Spain) as saying. “Although I couldn’t score a goal, I was completely dedicated to the match.

“I think few [people] believed that we would go this far [in the tournament], but we ultimately reached the semifinals.

“Poland could not create a lot of scoring opportunities, but they were working well in the defense.

“The penalty shootouts are always a lottery.

“Portugal played better, [and] created lot more scoring opportunities which[, however,] it could not convert.”

In the Euro 2016 semifinals, Portugal will face the winner of the Wales-Belgium quarterfinal clash on Friday.
