Lionel Messi statue unveiled in Buenos Aires

The statue of FC Barcelona (Spain) forward Lionel Messi was unveiled in the Argentine capital city of Buenos Aires. 

At the event, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, Head of Government of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, asked the Argentine national football squad captain to renounce his decision to leave the national team.

In addition, a campaign, entitled “Messi, don’t leave!,” has been launched in Argentina, and 100 thousand people have already joined it.

After Argentina’s losing to Chile in a penalty shootout in the final of Copa América which the US hosted, the Argentine national squad captain announced that he will quit the team.

Lionel Messi, 29, made his debut for Argentina in 2005, and he has 113 caps in the national team. In addition, he recently became his country’s leading scorer with 55, goals. The previous record belonged to Argentina football legend Gabriel Batistuta, who had a 54-goal tally.
