Candidates Tournament: Aronian plays draw with Caruana

The Candidates Tournament for the 2016 World Chess Championship, which is held in the Russian capital city of Moscow, is nearing its end.

In Round 12, Armenian Grandmaster (GM) Levon Aronian played with white black pieces against GM Fabiano Caruana (USA). Although Aronian had significant advantage and the computer was giving victory to him on the 39th move, the Armenian GM made a weak move. The game ended in a draw on the 67th move. Aronian has gained 6 points.

GM Sergey Karjakin (Russia) confidently defeated GM Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria) with white pieces. Now he leads the current standings in this competition with 7 points.
Caruana has also got 7 points.

GM Viswanathan Anand (India) was beaten by Hikaru Nakamura (USA).

Two rounds are left before the end of the tournament. On March 27, Aronian will play with white pieces against Karjakin. On the same day, Caruana vs Svidler, Topalov vs. Nakamura and Anand vs Giri games will take place.

The winner of the Candidates Tournament, which has about a €420-thousand prize fund, will be the challenger for the 2016 World Chess Championship against the reining champion, GM Magnus Carlsen (Norway), from November 11 to 30, in New York.
