Candidates Tournament: Levon Aronian draws in first round

Armenian Grandmaster (GM) Levon Aronian and Dutch GM Anish Giri played draw against in the first round of Candidates Tournament for the 2016 World Chess Championship.

The former World Champion Viswanathan Anand, who was playing with white peaces, proved stronger than Bulgarian Veselin Topalov.

Sergey Karjakin and Peter Svidler, as well as Hikaru Nakamura and Fabiano Caruana also played draw.

In the second round the Armenian chess leader Levon Aronian will play against Viswanathan Anand.

The winner of the Candidates Tournament, which has about a €420-thousand prize fund, will be the challenger for the 2016 World Chess Championship against the reining champion, GM Magnus Carlsen (Norway), from November 11 to 30, in New York.
