Chess World Cup Baku: Armenia’s Aronian advances to next round

Armenian chess Grandmaster (GM) Levon Aronian defeated International Master (IM) Michael Wiedenkeller (Luxembourg) 2-0 in the first round at the Chess World Cup 2015, which has kicked off in the Azerbaijani capital city of Baku.

As a result, Armenia’s top GM advanced to the 1/32 finals.

The second round will begin on September 14.

Aronian will also have an extra day of rest, since the tiebreaks of the first round will be played on Sunday.

The Chess World Cup 2015, which is a single-elimination tournament, will end on October 5.

The total prize money of this event is US$1.6 million.
