Former Japan football international Daisuke Oku died in a hospital on Friday after crashing his car in Okinawa, Japan, Thompsoncitizen reported.

According to local police, 38-year-old Oku veered into the opposite lane before slamming his car into a roadside utility pole.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

In June 2013, Oku was arrested on suspicion of threatening to kill his wife, but the prosecutors decided not to indict him.

Daisuke Oku was capped 26 times and scored twice for Japan’s national team between 1998 and 2004.
