Grandmaster (GM) Levon Aronian faced GM Magnus Carlsen (Norway) in Sunday’s Round 5 at the Sinquefield Cup chess tournament which is held in Saint Louis, USA. In the end, however, Aronian—who is second in the World Chess Federation (FIDE) rankings and who plays first board for the three-time World Chess Olympiad champions and the former World Team Chess champions Armenia—lost to 2013 World Chess Champion Carlsen, who tops the FIDE rankings, in the 70th move. GM Fabiano Caruana (Italy), on the other hand, recorded his fifth consecutive win at the tournament, which he leads with a perfect record. Aronian has tallied 1.5 points so far and he is at the bottom of the current standings, together with GM Hikaru Nakamura (USA).   The Armenian and the American GMs will play against each other in Tuesday’s Round 6.
