Grandmaster (GM) Levon Aronian defeated GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France, in the final round of the Alexander Alekhine Memorial chess tournament, and as a result he tallied a total of 5.5 points from a possible 9 points.

GM Boris Gelfand of Israel likewise has 5.5 points, but Aronian—who plays first board for the three-time World Chess Olympiad champion Armenian national team and who is currently ranked second in the World Chess Federation (FIDE) Ratings—is ahead of Gelfand on additional points.

GM Michael Adams of England, who is still playing against GM Vladimir Kramnik of Russia, has a chance to equal Aronian and Gelfand.

As NEWS.am Sport informed earlier, the first five rounds of the Alexander Alekhine Memorial chess tournament were held at the Louvre Museum in Paris, France, and the final four are taking place at the Russian State Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

The prize money of the competition is 100,000 euros.
