The winner of the Men’s European Individual Chess Championship, which will get underway in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, on Tuesday, will receive a smaller prize money than the victor at the Women’s European Championship, which wrapped up in Turkey.

And this is unprecedented in world chess.

The Plovdiv championship, in which Armenia’s leading grandmasters and masters likewise will compete, will come to a close on March 31.
