Referee Tobias Stieler, who officiated the German DFB-Pokal semifinal between FC Bayern Munich and SV Werder Bremen, admitted to wrongly awarding Bayern a penalty kick during the match.
“I apologize,” Bild daily newspaper of Germany quoted Stieler as saying. “Everything happened very quickly. I was in a good position, but it seemed to me that there was contact. Actually, there was no contact.”
The DFB-Pokal, or DFB Cup, is a German knockout football cup competition held annually. Sixty-four teams participate in the competition, including all clubs from the Bundesliga and the 2. Bundesliga. It is considered the second-most important club title in German football after the Bundesliga championship.
